06.04.2020 // not quite the clear waters of Venice, but because there aren't any narrowboats on this stretch of canal at the moment the water is still, and I did see the bottom of the canal for the first time in years.

05.04.2020 // I have a loop of the neighbourhood that I walk almost every day. It's about 4k, so it's not a long one, but there are four cats who live on the route and now it's spring they're often out sunning themselves in their front gardens when I walk by.

There's 'Bartholomew', a fat black and white cat with a pinned back tail and prominent bum hole who runs at me, full speed, only to flop on her side and demand tummy tickles, and her neighbour, an elderly black cat who is very slow on her paws and very good friends with Barth. Together they often chill out under a magnolia tree on the black cat's front lawn. Wherever the black cat goes, Barth follows as a loyal, protective sidekick.

Further along by the shop I often stop in for a can of diet coke there's a ginger cat I've named 'Headbutt' because of the way she likes to greet me, and her sibling who likes to take naps in a tiny wheelbarrow filled with garden soil.

I'm not sure what the etiquette of stroking someone else's cat during a pandemic is, but it's no good trying to tell a cat to maintain a distance of 2m from you when they see you, the neighbourhood cat crazy, approaching on a quiet street.

I started Sanshiro last night and three chapters in I'm enjoying it, so fingers crossed this is a turning point.
