By the end of January I really start to notice the light returning. I struggle with the midwinter darkness and gloom. In the UK we don’t really get snow, so winter is just a gloomy and ambiguous kind of season where nothing much happens. This is my second winter with house plants and I am starting to feel more confident. There are weeks left in the season so I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but so far I haven’t had any winter casualties in my house plant collection.

Today I put up some new shelves in the living room, in the interest of letting my plants absorb as much sun as they can whilst keeping them safely out of reach of Gustave, my eighteen week old kitten. I really like the way they look, and seeing the low winter sun stretch in and over their leaves made me feel really happy. It’s a simple thing, but simple things are often the best.

An honest portrait of my living room, mess and all.
